I am Lakshay R Goyal and welcome to Humanitarian. Today we will be discussing, “English: A Language or A Skill?”

English is one of the most popular languages around the world. The English language can’t be defined under one main language, but different countries have different English, like American English, British English, Indian English, etc. English changes with distance and so happens with the Accent.

But, our main debate is not about it’s popularity, it’s about its significance and use.

Introduction:

So, the other day my friend was worried about his spoken English. He was feeling embarrassed while speaking English. And this is the truth for all. I don’t know about other countries, but particularly in India, I have seen many people getting embarrassed while speaking English.

Everyone wants to learn English, but no one speaks it really. The main thing that comes to mind while speaking English is the future embarrassment. We all think if the other person will judge us on our Language and how we are talking.

In this modern era, English is seen as a necessity and not as an option. We all want to pursue what we want to, but there are certain eligibility criteria that need to be fulfilled.

So the question arises- Is English a Language or a Skill? So, let’s start.

The Real Necessity:

English has emerged as a universal language. Not just country to country, but state to state too.

A person from Punjab will be able to communicate in South India only if he uses English as his medium. It is because the Northern Indian Language of Hindi is not so popular in the Southern part of the Subcontinent.

So, here the English Language serves as a common medium. Not just verbal communication, but if you see food packets, they have at least two languages in either the lables or instructions. Languages are- the country it is manufactured and of course English and sometimes other languages as well. There are a plethora of examples showing dominance of English over other languages.

So, here comes the answer to our former question. English is a language that is necessary for basic communication with a large mass of people belonging to different regions. Here, we can’t say that it is a skill!

A Status Symbol:

A majority of the population of India doesn’t speak English. So, the Person who speaks English looks like a well educated man. His speaking skills look like a status symbol in Society. In Reputed Families, speaking Hindi is like a Sin. The English language has been considered as a Royal Language in India.

For instance, A Father is proud when his son converses in English with the Customer Support. And this is not a joke. The Royal family of England left it here and The Indians are picking it up.

I guess we all need to know what is important. We need to see English not as a Status Symbol but as a language, which is important for social conversations though.

Eligibility Criteria:

This is something that has been a hot topic for a very long time.

  1. In the majority of the Clerical Government Exams or Officer Exams, a certain number of questions from the English language have been made compulsory. Though it is an important step, but people with Non-English backgrounds tend to suffer.
  2. Also, The medium of Teaching in most higher studies is English only. The Higher Studies expects an adult to be well versed in English.
  3. Whether it is Programs or Internships, Proper English requirements have been no longer a choice, but eligibility criteria now.

So, in Conclusion we can say that English language requirement has been an important part of one’s life and clearly one’s future careers.

Bottom Line:

So, here we are at the answer. English is kind of a language as per me. But, in this article, Only one perspective has been expressed. We can also see it as a Skill. For this you need to wait for my next article. The next article is all about how English is a Skill.
